Our Story

May in the kitchen

Our vision for May’s Kitchen is simple: great food, a warm welcome and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where everyone feels at home. We also want it to be a great place to work — somewhere our team can learn, develop their skills and enjoy being part of the hospitality industry.

Opening the doors at No. 5 Cromwell Street feels like the beginning of a very special new chapter for our family. May’s Kitchen is a dream that has been years in the making, and we’re so excited to finally share it with you.

May’s Kitchen has been a dream of ours for a long time. After a life that has taken us from the Philippines to Egypt, mainland UK and finally to the Isle of Lewis, we feel we’ve found our forever home here.

 TO THE HEBRIDES

Me and my husband Elliot moved to Lewis three years ago with our daughter Elliza, looking for a fresh start. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to work in some wonderful local kitchens, learning, developing and being encouraged by people who trusted me to grow as a chef. Those experiences gave us the confidence to finally take the leap and create a place of our own.

Bringing our dream to life

Taking on No. 5 Cromwell Street gave us the chance to create May’s Kitchen from the ground up, transforming the space into the warm, relaxed restaurant we had imagined. The renovation has been a real labour of love, with weeks of stripping back, rebuilding, painting, fitting and finishing, while making the most of the character of the building. Seeing it gradually come together has been incredibly exciting, turning an empty space and a lot of ideas into a restaurant that feels completely our own – somewhere full of personality where we hope everyone feels comfortable, relaxed and welcome.
